Merry Christmas

Some of you may be heading off home to see family so we might not hear from you for a little while. Others will be settling down at home for a Christmas of gadgets…

Christmas in Bellingham - front of our house

Either way, by Christmas there’s a good chance there will be 6,000 of you signed up to this blog and 5,000 on Facebook – so I’ll take this opportunity in both cases (sorry if you’re on both) to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  I’ll be around for most but not all of it.

Thanks for looking in – and if you’ve not logged in – now’s a good time.

Regards

Pete.

  1. Those dust sensors really need forced air flow to get the best from them. They are not so good at just detecting sitting in still air.

I am building a unit just now with a similar dust sensor but using a small 5V fan running at 50% speed so that it can force air through the sensor. This works far better.

  2. Happy christmas peter to you and your wife, and all the others users that use the site.

I would like to take the time to say a big thankyou for all the amazing work that you and others have done. I have only been reading your blog for about a month but find it an excellent resource for bulding a home automation system. I have built my system following your blog exploits and am having some excellent results so far.

I do however have a question that has been bothering me for over a week so if anyone knows the answers i would be very gratefull to hear from you. My clock seems to be going backwards, it works only 9 is at the oposite side where 3 should be 1 is at 11, 5 is at 7. This is quite confusing when trying to tell the time and gets harder and harder as the night gets on. Has anybody else had this, if so how did you fix it.

I am also wanting to build the nextion display unit but when my display arrived from china i quickly found out it was the chinese only version so am now waiting for another unit to arrive.

Dont suppose anyone has got a spare board that i could purchase as i am not so good with those eagles and dont want to mess up ordering them from china.

Anyhow keep up the good work, once again merry christmas and a happy new year to all..

    Thanks
    Mark

    1. I guess a little more info would be helpful. Which clock? Are you referring to the RGB serial LED clock in my Home Control 2016 ESP software? If it is going backwards then this can only be due to the LED ring you have purchased. You refer to a Nextion board and in the next sentence talk about using Eagle? You’re not wanting to design a Nextion board are you?

      Regards

      Pete.

      1. Sorry for the confusion peter, yes it is the serial addressable WS2812B LED’s they are really cool and the clock rocks. Shame i have to study it before i can get the proper time for it. Yes again sorry for going off topic asking you one question then going on about another, I get easily sidetracked, but i get there in the end.

No im not wanting to design my own board, why re-invent the wheel when you have a perfectly good designed board allready. No i was just asking if you or anyone had a spare one kicking around. I have never had any PCB’s made and didnt want to make a mess of things ordering from china as i have had much bad luck with items from china at the moment, everything that i order seems to be either broken, dosent arrive or is the totally wrong part that i ordered.

Anyway thanks for the reply, I think i am going to order another ring of LED’s from a diffrent sellar to see if this rectifies the problem. I think ill have a play with i2c tonight and see if i can get some more outputs from this amazing chip.

  3. I’d like to add my gratitude for all your work and sharing; it has been inspiring and helpful. All the best for the season and next year!

PS I used to live near Bellingham when I was much smaller than I am now…

  4. This blog has been brilliant this year and has moved on so much since the early days of Arduino and ESP8266s that we couldn’t get to work! You have done an excellent job Peter, so thank you for all your efforts and information. Have a great Christmas and a productive (and happy) New Year

    1. The new Android – welcomed of course – but two things come to mine – a friend of mine is already trying this out on the Pi – and it is not just the usual “blow an SD” – at least not yet . Also – I see no mention of the important issue for the Pi3 – supporting the graphics chip. Indeed I’ve not seen support for the Pi3 graphics chip anywhere yet. Similarly the Odroid 2 which is way faster than the Pi, has marvelous graphics capability but without software to support it…..

  5. From the south of Portugal i wish to you, to your family and to all the readers a very nice Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Continue to share your know how and good ideas.
