What, ANOTHER Gauge?

Now, before you say anything – this gauge is different to the rest.. It is all mine and it EVOLVING (last update Feb 03) if you’ve seen this blog entry before today…

Gauges: Peter Scargill's GaugeI’ve spent a lot of time ploughing through code, some of it years old (SteelSeries) and though many of these designs are beautiful, most are not that well supported if at all and some comprise libraries that are kitchen sink jobs that take some learning, so much so that recently, in a fit of peak, after failing to figure out how to add a simple second dial or eliminate the wasted space of that metal outer ring in SteelSeries (it is easy to make it disappear but not the space it occupies) that I decided to “give it a go” myself.

What you see here is not finished but it works (and is a lot prettier when you see it running).  It scales without internal adjustments other than the gauge size as I need something that will easily adapt to differing Node-Red template blocks.

As the dials move below the (circular) set-points the LEDS will go on and off – one triggers BELOW the set-point (heat), the other ABOVE (dehumidifier).

In the process of making this I’ve made a number of dials and centres – all in PowerPoint – very simple.

I call these three metalCarvedCentre.png, greenCarveCentre.png and greyCentre.png respectively. I don’t plan to make a lot as there must be millions of needles and centres out there already.

tmpFF04Glowing rings are easy to add… and I’m working on an LCD display background image that’s hopefully a little more convincing than the canvas-manufactured version I’m using right now.

If you poke the test values, you should see the gauge needles move smoothly to their destination. So I’m really happy about (and this happens a LOT it seems) having to update the whole thing every 20ms for animation when all I want is to update the dials (and an LCD panel eventually) – but I can’t find LAYERS anywhere.

What I HAVE done elsewhere is use Z-laying with multiple canvases to achieve layering as you will see in the link below. Originally I had 3 layers – the background, the bits that change and the knob over the needle – all of which SHOULD have worked perfectly – but for reasons beyond me the knob didn’t always show. I moved it in with the dial and all is well – so only two identical canvas units are needed. This seems like a good general way forward. I will change my main dial code to follow this pattern eventually when I’ve pondered what effect this will have on interfacing.  Anyway, I put this together from scratch and it seems to work ok, Take a look at this.. https://jsfiddle.net/scargill/r4qstas2/6/

A timer runs constantly but does nothing unless a change is made  and the values are then incremented or decremented until they  match the required values.

I think this will make a fine addition to the visual tools we have but still needs much tidying up so no comments about code quality please.

Fonts: Fonts are always a thing – and the normal web ones are today considered to be utterly pants. So – TTF fonts are good but also large – so I found this online convertor. You simply drag a TTF file of your choosing (clearly if for commercial purposes, you need to make sure it is free) and you get the option to download from a link – it works. So I wanted a nice dot matrix font for the little display here – and I found “Dots all for Now JL” which is pretty but also 44K. I ran it through the convertor and in less than a minute I was up and running with a font that is only 7k.

To use the font, I did this..

and then just referred to DOTMAT as you would any font. Now there are all sorts of warnings on the web about ensuring fonts are loaded first and working with CANVAS etc. – but somehow, in Node-Red, it all just works… which is nice and keeps the code simple.

And that’s it for now. I’m working on improving the code.

  1. Hello Peter (or someone else), Before I start with “ANOTHER Gauge” I am trying to solve (I think) a verry stuped problem. I have a WeMos D1 mini with a DHT (the blue one, not verry stable) sending every second the temperature and humidity to my privat (mosquito) broker. That works fine (tested on my iPAD with the MQTT Tester client). Also to grep this information with noder-red from my broker, works fine with a debug tab (see the recieved payload in the image). My problem is how to send the value from the message string to a standard gauge. I think I have to filter the value out of the string (function), but how to do that? I know nothing about js yet. Can you help me? Thanks and regards…

    1. Hi Wijnand,

      You’re right, with the way you’re populating your mqtt message with the string “Temperature:[VALUE]” at the moment, you’d need to split the string apart and pass the numeric [VALUE] part onto the gauge node. I could question why your mqtt message includes the “Temperature:” part and not just the numeric part..because if it just contained the numeric part it would just work as-is..but I won’t bother and I’ll offer this JS:

      Stick this JS into a function node, give this function node the name “split” (or whatever you want to call it) and slot this function node in between your mqtt node and your gauge node. This should make the gauge display your value.

      What does this JS do?:

      1) It takes the string value received from your mqtt message (line #1)
      2) It splits the number part of your string using a regular expression (lines 2+3)
      3) It passes the number part on as a brand new message (line #4)

      1. Not really Antonio – so the first one DSEG7 has some strange combination of upper and lower case, and the DSEG14 has that horrible S with a line through it. If I could get rid of the line I think I might be happy with DSEG14. Having said all that as I sit here and look at it – I could always do a global replace of S with 5…. hmmm. you might be onto something here.

        Also having some issue with preloading fonts… when the LCD starts up it often initially has a normal font – presumably as the web font has not loaded – yet traditional pre-loading techniques I’ve seen don’t seem to work at all in Node-Red Template…

      2. /ok, just one TEENY little problem – remember on the original gauge I used semi-transparent character to make it look like a traditional LCD behind the main characters – so that the time etc looked traditional?

        Well, that’s fine unless you use a SPACE – because for reasons well beyond me, the author of the font used a different spacing for SPACE and COLON!! He then cheated on the colon by simply using a semi-transparent colon.

        If however you have variable text – while of course you could check – leaving space and colon alone and replacing all other characters with the “all segments on” character – that still leaves a right margin that is changing with every change of text. ARGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH

            1. ps data uris work well for images too – inline in html img tags or in css for background-image selectors etc. The less requests the better..

              1. That web font squirrel online utility made it a doodle to convert the font into inline CSS….

                So – following good practice and to avoid lots of mess in my Node-Red file, I put an include to the style sheet on my Pi back in the UK with all of that base64 font stuff at the top of the page.

                And of COURSE it failed again because you have exactly the same problem – the Node-Red page STILL has to load up the include file.

                However, if I actually include the base 64 data in the Node-Red template – the problem goes away completely!

                That will have to do until a miracle occurs…. thank you for that.

                1. Cool, good to hear you got it going and it worked as I expected it would. There’s a general performance problem with css and js includes in templates (script tag with src attr and link tag with href attr).

                  The template node is completely broken for script includes IMO because although scripts are eventually included, they are always cache busted with a timestamp query string parameter appended to the end of the script resource request. So there’s always a performance hit including a script via an include within a template node where the entire script will always be downloaded to the client and it’s way better to inline the entire JS in the template if possible. This problem is related to how the template node works and how it parses the content within the template – I touched upon this problem in the comments around here: https://tech.scargill.net/a-deep-learning-weekend/#comment-31331

                  It’s not “as bad” when you include a link to a css resource in a template but it’s still quite bad. The upshot is that it does generally work but it still comes with the performance hit of another http request (generally a 304). The css resource doesn’t get cache busted, you do end up with a link href within the body of the document and the html standards guys have recently clarified that including a link href within the document body is not completely against the laws of nature (https://www.w3.org/Bugs/Public/show_bug.cgi?id=27303#c37)

                  I’d say the template node is good and flexible but it’s quite easy to shoot yourself in the foot with it and until someone comes up with a better idea, my approach is to inline all css and js directly within the template where possible

            2. Thanks for that – great idea. That link looks good – and no I’ve not solved the preload issue. I need to figure out how to convert a WOFF file into that inline format . The writing style of that link takes some getting through…..

  2. Hi Pete, Testing out the new gauge code. I’m no programmer so when I hooked up the needles to my DHT-22 was surprised to see the needles jumping back and forth. After a night of sleep I noticed that you are not feeding it tenths of a degree so after adding Math.round to the function feeding the gauge everything works great!

    1. Excellent. I’ve made my case elsewhere against bothering with sub-degree accuracy – however if you need it the source is there. I’ve JUST cracked how to wrap the lot into an object so new code coming up soon no doubt.

    1. Fixed and I now have a better way forward – see the updated comment about layering. I’m working on a new version which at least in theory should run even smoother.

  4. I’ve updated the gauge code and now it is in Node-Red – I found JSFiddle fine for playing around with but somewhat unreliable at saving code!!! So now you can inject values to change the gauges – at some point I’ll wrap the whole lot up in an object as it’s a bit messy in there.

    1. Yes, JSfiddle isn’t that flippin’ annoying, I’ve done some stuff at home and then looked at it at work and it’s not there, I suspect it stores it local to the PC first.

      1. Yes.. the thing is – Codepen is better BUT doesnt’ have the TIDY function that JSFIDDLE has – it really would be nice if they’d fix the versioning.

  5. Yes, I started out thinking ‘another dial, what is Pete up to?’. I’m glad I read on. Yes, I’ve run into the ‘how the heck do I do this?’ with many of these widgets. So, Thanks Pete for the hard work. Hopefully I’ll be able to contribute something back at a later date.

The next revision will no doubt be different… I’m thinking already that in order to get two running in a page (I can’t think why one might want to do that but anyway) – I need to get rid of as many global vars as poss. A few hours away from this and no doubt it will all become clear, along with how to get legends along the edge of the dial.
